Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty that uses these radioactive tracers to access bodily functions and to diagnose and treat disease. At KIRAN Nuclear medicine services divided into Diagnostic section, Therapeutic section and Clinical services.

Diagnostic section covers all nuclear medicine investigations for thyroid, bone, lung, kidneys, hepatobiliary, prostrate and neuro-endocrine tumors. Quantitative tests include thyroid uptake (I-131), GFR, Relative renal function, Gall Bladder ejection fraction, Cardiac ejection fraction etc. Whole body MDP bone scan, I131 whole body scan and SPECT studies (e.g., bone, Parathyroid, DMSA, PSMA etc.) are also performed.

Therapeutic section of Nuclear Medicine covers treatment of patients with radioactive iodine (I-131). Patients suffering from Grave’s disease, toxic multinodular goiter and toxic hot nodule are treated on outdoor basis. Those suffering from differentiated carcinoma of thyroid seek treatment for thyroid ablation. Four isolation rooms are available for the patients who need hospitalization for radionuclide therapies. Recently KIRAN also offer Theranostic services (Lu-177 Therapy) for Prostate cancer (CRPC) and Neuroendocrine tumors.

Clinical services KIRAN offer Filter Clinic and Thyroid Clinic on daily basis. To develop academic and research activities, KIRAN also collaborates with a number of institutes including PIEAS, University of Karachi, NED University, DUHS, SIUT, JPMC, PNS etc. Many Nuclear Physicians, Medical Physicists, Biomedical students and Lab Researchers from above mentioned institutions have conducted their research work at KIRAN. Department of Nuclear Medicine is continuously catering for teaching and training in field of Nuclear Medicine. Post graduate trainees of MS (Nuclear Medicine), MCPS (Radiology), FCPS (Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology) are attached for their training requirements for specified length of time. As a recognized post-graduate training center for CPSP, PIEAS, and other prestigious institutes, the department is also deeply engaged in nuclear medicine research. It is home to Consultant and Specialist Nuclear Medicine Physicians who are highly regarded for their expertise in both diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine. The department boasts numerous publications in well-respected international journals with high impact factors. Thanks to its commitment to providing top-quality services, the number of patients visiting the department continues to grow, prompting the extension of services to evenings across six working days.
